Shiatsu is a form of bodywork therapy that works on the physical, emotional, and spiritual energy levels of the body to release tension and promote healing on all levels. It originated in Japan, and the term shiatsu means finger pressure. There are various forms of shiatsu, all using the basic technique of applying finger pressure to pressure points on the body (the same ones used in acupuncture) in order to release tension, and balance energy flows and body systems so as to improve or maintain good health. The work is usually done on a mat on the floor. The recipient remains clothed for the treatment.
Namikoshi Shiatsu Therapy is based on antomy and physiology. It works symptomatically using neurmuscular trigger points focussed around areas of pain to release tension in the nervous system, muscles and organs, and to facilitate the body's self healing processess. It includes an emphasis on maintaining health by practising the 5 principles of helath, viz. good diet, elimination, exercise, sleep and laughter.
Body Energy Balance Shiatsu Therapy combines basic shiatsu massage with meridian and acupuncture techniques and shiatsu based oriental diagnosis. Energy (Qi) blockages or deficiencies are released and energy flow balanced, which leaves the recipient relaxed and invigorated.
There is as yet no NHTS endorsed school teaching Body Energy Balance Shiatsu.
